Taobao vs AliExpress: Same Group, Different Prices, Different Ways to Buy

Straight answer

Taobao and AliExpress both belong to Alibaba Group, but they're built for different buyers. Taobao (launched 2003) is China's domestic marketplace: Chinese-language listings, domestic prices, domestic delivery. AliExpress (launched 2010) sells the same kinds of goods to shoppers abroad, with prices that include international shipping and platform costs. That's why Taobao is usually cheaper per item. But Taobao ships directly to only about a dozen markets — not the UK or the EU — so most Western buyers need a shopping agent, which adds a fee, international freight by weight, and the loss of AliExpress's 15-day free returns. For one or two items, AliExpress usually wins; for a haul of five or more, Taobao through an agent often does.

Why is Taobao cheaper than AliExpress?

A Taobao price is a domestic price. The seller quotes for a customer in China, delivery is a few yuan by local courier, and there's no international platform margin. An AliExpress price for a similar item has to cover the seller's international postage, AliExpress's commission and payment costs, currency risk, and returns handled across borders. Often it's the same factory, or a reseller buying from it.

How big is the gap? It varies by product, and nobody publishes a reliable average. The best-documented example is for 1688, Alibaba's wholesale site, rather than Taobao: WorldFirst's guide cites an item at $8 on AliExpress and $3–4 on 1688. Taobao retail prices sit between the two. For clothing and accessories, a Taobao price at half the AliExpress price is common; for branded electronics the gap can be small or reversed.

Verdict: Taobao's lower price is real, but it's a price before the costs AliExpress already includes.

How do you buy from Taobao if you're outside China?

Taobao has been extending direct overseas shipping: a May 2025 report counted free overseas shipping to 12 markets, and a January 2026 guide from Jiyun Global lists the countries it ships to directly. The UK and the EU aren't on the list. For buyers there, and for anyone who wants photos before shipping or several shops in one box, the route is a shopping agent:

When does AliExpress beat Taobao?

AliExpress is the better buy more often than Taobao fans admit. It wins when:

  • You want one or two items. An agent parcel carries a minimum shipping charge that swamps the price gap on a small order.
  • The item is generic. Phone cases, cables, kitchen tools — the Taobao and AliExpress versions are often identical and the AliExpress price is already low.
  • Returns matter. AliExpress offers free returns within 15 days on eligible items; an agent can only return before shipping.
  • You're in the EU and buying one category. One AliExpress parcel owes €3 plus VAT at checkout; an agent parcel owes the same, so the agent has to save money elsewhere.

Taobao through an agent wins when you're buying five or more things, mostly clothing and shoes, from several shops — or when the item simply isn't on AliExpress, which is true of a lot of smaller Chinese labels and most Weidian finds.

Verdict: Price the AliExpress version first. Go to Taobao when the basket is big or the item isn't on AliExpress.

Finding the Taobao version of an AliExpress item

Finding the Taobao version of an AliExpress item is easier than it sounds. Three approaches work:

  1. Image search. Taobao's app and most agents' search bars accept a photo. Screenshot the AliExpress product image and search with it.
  2. Chinese keywords. The AliExpress title is usually a translation. Put its key nouns into a translator and search Taobao with the Chinese.
  3. Seller names. Some AliExpress stores are the export arm of a Taobao shop with a similar name.

Then compare like for like: the Taobao price plus the agent fee, plus a share of the parcel's shipping, against the AliExpress price as shown at checkout. Is Taobao cheaper than AliExpress?

Usually per item, because Taobao prices are domestic and don't include international shipping or cross-border costs. Once agent fees and freight are added, AliExpress is often cheaper for one or two items.
