VAT and the €3 duty on AliExpress orders to Germany

Germany follows the EU rules, which changed twice for Chinese marketplaces. In 2021 the €22 VAT exemption ended and marketplaces started collecting VAT at checkout for parcels up to €150. In July 2026 a flat customs duty was added to those same parcels:

'Category' means a customs classification, not a product type on AliExpress: a T-shirt and a hoodie may fall under different headings, while two T-shirts in the same parcel count once. Because the duty is per parcel, five small orders from five stores can carry five separate €3 charges even if each contains one item.

Verdict: For Germany, count parcels as well as prices. Fewer parcels with fewer kinds of item mean less duty.

Who brings AliExpress parcels in Berlin, and how long it takes

Berlin apartment blocks make missed deliveries common. If a parcel goes to DHL, you can redirect it to a Packstation or a Postfiliale from the DHL app once you have the German tracking number; Hermes and GLS have their own parcel-shop networks. A Packstation address at checkout only works if the parcel is handed to DHL, so it's safer to use your street address and redirect later.

The guaranteed delivery date on the order page is what matters for protection. If it passes, open a dispute; if the parcel arrives but isn't what was listed, you have 15 days to claim.

One Berlin haul, two routes

Four items from four AliExpress stores at €24 each, free shipping: four parcels, one category each. The same four items bought on Taobao and Weidian through an agent cost about €68 at domestic prices, plus roughly €24 of freight and fees, in one box holding 3 categories:

The agent box lands about €8.33 cheaper and arrives as one delivery. The duty gap alone is €3. With two items, or one heavy one, AliExpress usually wins, and it always wins on returns: free returns within 15 days on eligible items, which an agent can't offer once the box has left China.

Ordering from AliExpress to Germany: what helps

• Check the order summary for VAT and duty lines before paying. If neither appears on a parcel under €150, expect a bill at import.
• Bundle within a store. Several items from one store usually ship as one parcel and count as one duty event per category.
• Keep the name on the doorbell and the order identical; DHL drivers in large Berlin buildings go by the bell plate.
• EU shoe sizes are native here, but Chinese clothing labels aren't: decode 175/92A with the size converter.
• Save the listing screenshot; German consumer bodies and AliExpress disputes both ask for it.

AliExpress is also under closer EU scrutiny: the European Commission fined it €550 million under the Digital Services Act in July 2026. That doesn't change what you pay, but it's one reason listings removed for policy reasons can vanish from a spreadsheet overnight.
